Douglas passed away peacefully on November 4, 2016 at Arbour Creek Nursing Home, his son Paul by his side during the night until his passing early in the morning. He had lived 9 long years as a widower and suffered from Parkinsons. When the end came, it was a blessing. The staff and Dr Hornich at Arbour Creek were good to Dad and to the rest of us during this journey. Thank you to all of them.

Doug was born in 1930 to Hattie and Ernest Chetwynd, in Woods Harbour Nova Scotia, the 9th of 10 children. Doug lost his mum at 4 years old and was raised by his dad and siblings, mostly Leta who was only 12 when their mother died. Doug is predeceased by his parents and 8 of his 9 siblings; younger sister Orley still lives in Nova Scotia.

Douglas met his wife Lena in Hamilton in the 50’s, married and raised 4 children: Rick, David (Karen), Paul (Paulette) and Dorian (Colin). He has 9 grandchildren Andrew (Tori), Jacob, Lindsay (Ken), Jessica (Shane), Ricky (Amelia), Robby (Ashley), Danielle, Olivia and Georgia as well as 4 great grandsons: Hunter, Brayson, Jase, Preston and one more on the way, due in February 2017, and many more to come. Doug supported his family by working two and sometimes three jobs, primarily at Stelco. Dad was a hard worker; whether it be at his paid employment, working around the family home, helping friends and neighbours or working at the church, it seemed he rarely stopped. He was a true family man, you could set your watch by his comings and goings. If he stopped for a haircut without telling Mum, Mum would wait for him at the front door, worried something had happened. We were blessed to have such a man as a husband, father, grandfather and now great grandfather.

Dad worked tirelessly at the church, when he was able. Whether it was living Jesus’ ministry of acceptance and tending to the needy, or keeping the bricks and mortar together, Laidlaw United Church was a big part of Dad’s life. Should you choose to make a donation in his name, Laidlaw United Church on Ottawa Street in Hamilton ON is a good way to honour him.

Dad, we will do our best to continue your legacy of hard work and goodness. We love you and miss you already but take solace knowing that you and Mum are reunited. Good bye for now.
